When it comes to Technology I have always believed I was very clued up and knowledgeable so when I was offered the role at Expert Web I jumped at it as I thought I would be half way there with me my existing knowledge. How wrong was I!
On my first day, I was told the ethos of the business was to offer affordable Web Design to the local business community of South Yorkshire and beyond! This gave me the illusion that because it was affordable it would be easy to produce internally. Well let me tell you, I was wrong, totally wrong!
A few years ago, I set up and ran a successful Social Media Management company so my knowledge on this side of this was, and still is, excellent. This however is such a small part in the grand scheme. Let me put this into context. To any trained web developer, this picture would make sense.
To everyone else, me included, it is a whole new language. I might as well have a passage of Chinese text on my screen. I would not know where to start with this and where to start try to learn it!
But this is the beauty of Expert Web. I don’t need to. This is not my job. We have a superb team of people who are “experts” (Excuse the pun) in their given field.
Rich makes the sites look amazing from an aesthetics point of view, whilst Rob and his team make them “work”. These are the guys who understand and are proficient in the new language. What this small team can achieve with a website is simply incredible. Take this site for example. My personal Website. It is all down to Rob who has been simply incredible in helping me get it live and working! I could never thank him enough!
Having said this, before we can even start work in a new site, it needs planning. Chris and Alex in production map the sites, agree this with the client and then Alex takes over and ensure the various “Sprints” are adhered to. This sprint system is an internal process we use to ensure the sites are built correctly and efficiently.
So back to my original question and the title of this blog. What have I learnt in my first 3 months working in Web Design. The answer is easy. This business functions as a team. Everyone has their specialism and everyone appreciates and values what each other does. I will never be able to learn how to code a website, but the truth is, I don’t need to learn.
All the above considered, the people above could not do what they do If I didn’t do what I do and market this business in the way I do, that my specialism and what I bring to the team and the business.
Until Next Time…
